Conditions of Service

Pay is in line with States' Policy and pay scales are above those in England and Wales. In terms of personal taxation allowances are larger (now over £15000 pa for a married couple) and there is a flat rate of income tax of 20%. Teachers can transfer their pension rights from the UK into (and out of) the Guernsey scheme. Class sizes are relatively small (typically under 20 at KS3 & 4).

Quality of life
Guernsey is a very pleasant island to live on with good links to the UK and France. The lack of major cities means that many of the problems and threats of urban Britain are absent. The incidence of all types of crime is very low on Guernsey and this helps to contribute to making this a safe and happy environment in which to raise children. Furthermore with its temperate climate, sandy west coast beaches and spectacular south coast cliffs quality of life on the island is high.

Residency
Whilst there are restrictions upon residency in Guernsey teaching posts at College qualifying for 5 or 15-year housing licences, depending upon seniority. 15-year licences effectively grant permanent right of residence on the island. Applicants with a partner should note that there is a shortage of labour on the island (both skilled and unskilled) and that your partner would automatically receive the right to work.

NQTs
NQTs at the College are encouraged to gain qualified teaching status (as recognised in the UK) via a scheme externally validated by the Guernsey Education Department.

In some circumstances College may be willing to employ candidates who do not possess a teaching qualification provided they are able to offer good academic qualifications and experience. Such candidates are encouraged to complete a PGCE by distance learning.

We are always happy to receive CVs from teachers seeking employment, which we will hold on file against possible future vacancies.
