Friends of Acorn House

Who are the ‘Friends’ of Acorn?
All parents of children in Acorn School and Pre-School automatically become members of The Friends of Acorn House when their child starts at Acorn. A Committee of parents has been formed to represent The Friends in order to organise fundraising initiatives and agree appropriate requests to benefit.

Why is fundraising necessary?
Like all schools Acorn House has a wish list of items which fall outside the remit of the allocated budget. Unlike the States sector, the school cannot apply to the Education Department for these ‘extras’ and that is where the Friends step in. The Friends plug the gap by providing Acorn House with these wish list extras, helping to purchase the most up to date learning and recreational resources that the funds allow.

How is the fundraising organised?
The main fundraising event is the Annual Ball including an auction. This event usually takes place in the Michaelmas Term which also ends with the Christmas Fair. In the Lent term another social event is usually organised such as a quiz night and the committee organise the production of merchandise individually decorated by the children. In the Trinity Term there is a very successful family beach barbeque and tea/coffee/cake stall at Sports Day.

How have the funds been spent recently?
In the last few years the funds raised have been used to contribute towards the purchase of musical instruments, storage trolleys, outdoor play equipment and storage sheds, computers, digital cameras, cooking equipment, interactive tactile whiteboards, a £10,000 contribution to the new playground area and a £8,000 contribution towards a new minibus.

Who makes up the Committee?
There are usually around twelve to fourteen parents on the committee with four elected positions: Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer and Secretary. Sitting on the Committee is entirely voluntary although some representation from each year group is preferred. New faces are always welcome.
