Art & Students' Art Work

Elizabeth College

Art is a popular subject at Elizabeth College and there are plenty of opportunities for students to develop their artistic potential and exhibit their work. The summer exhibition is the highlight of the year for students working towards GCSE and A level examinations in Art and Photography. The work is always exciting and often thought-provoking with students working in a wide range of disciplines, from traditional approaches such as drawing, painting and print-making to new media such as installation, and video art.

In January we have a themed exhibition where students from all years can show their work. The theme of the most recent exhibition was ‘Portraiture’ and the work can be seen in the slideshow below. We think that it is important for the younger boys to get the chance to show their work alongside the 6th form students with the hope that the experience will inspire them to be ambitious in their work. Work ranged from traditional portrait paintings to experiments in printmaking.

Trinity 2011 will see the launch of the Arts Award. This is a national qualification which supports young people to develop as artists and arts leaders. The award will help our students to develop their creative skills and their ability to communicate their ideas to others. Students with a particular talent and enthusiasm for art will be able to participate in an extra-curricular programme where visiting artists will run workshops and projects in support of the Arts Award.

Everyone, regardless of ability, is encouraged to explore their creativity and enjoy making art, and Art Club is a weekly addition to the after-school activities programme with projects such as mask making and animation. Boys can also get involved with painting the sets for the school play or entering art competitions. Above all, we aim to foster a love of art and an appreciation of the central role it plays in the developing culture of our community.

The above represents a sample of the portraits exhibited in the Art Block as part of an annual show.
